Chapter 7: The Wound
"Stay inside," Damian said, and shut the shop door on the guard's face.
He drew the blinds one by one, and the room fell into the dim light of the lamp.
"They're parked a block away," Lena said. "That's all they're doing."
"For now."
"What do they want?"
"You." He turned from the window. "My grandfather has known where you are since yesterday."
"Because of Phoebe's call?"
His eyes flicked up.
"Phoebe called me," he said. "She didn't call him."
"Somebody did."
He had no answer.
He stood in the middle of her workshop, a man in a ruined black coat, looking at the cot through the open supply room door and the blanket she had slept under.
She thought of every night she had come home to his house and found him waiting up.
She thought of the ring on the desk.
It all rose in her throat at once, and she said it before she could stop.
"Six months," Lena said.
Damian looked at her.
"I want you to hear the number. Six months of calling myself your wife.
"I told my coworkers. I told a woman in the pharmacy line.
"I sat at my mother's Sunday table and said the word husband and watched her cry."
"Lena."
"No. You'll listen."
Her voice shook and she let it.
"I planned a baby with you.
"I picked a name for the nursery in my head, in your house, because I thought it was ours.
"Every night I went to sleep believing I was safe, and the whole time you knew I wasn't anyone's wife."
