Chapter 14: The Bow
Brennan's POV
Todd's father was standing at the bow lines when I brought the four-thirty boat in.
I saw him from the pilothouse as I came around the breakwater at MacMillan Pier.
He wore a navy windbreaker with Mercer Marine across the chest, and he stood alone on the dock with his hands in his pockets.
He was sixty-four and had never once been early for anything.
I put her alongside in a light southwest wind, and my deckhand stepped off with the bow line and made it fast.
The passengers came off with their bikes and their dogs.
Mr. Mercer waited until the last one had gone.
Then he stepped onto the gangway and took a long white envelope out of his jacket.
"Brennan," he said.
"Mr. Mercer."
"Can we talk in the cabin?"
"We can talk here," I said.
I had called the operations manager from the Boston terminal that morning.
He had told me, in a flat careful voice, that Mercer Marine had phoned the ferry line three times since Wednesday.
They had said Captain Driscoll had taken a woman in the middle of a breakdown out of the country.
