Chapter 16: The Night Crossing
The ferry line wanted its fast boat in Boston for an inspection on Wednesday, and Brennan wanted me aboard when he took her.
Darby had stayed on my couch until two the night before, showing us the rest of the folder on Todd's laptop.
She had driven back to Harwich at dawn to sit at the yard's front desk and say nothing.
We left Provincetown on Tuesday at ten at night, with no passengers.
The deckhand put in earplugs, pulled his hood up, and lay down on a bench in the stern cabin.
"I'd sleep through a cannon, Captain," he said, and shut his eyes with great firmness.
I climbed the short stair to the pilothouse in the dark.
It was the same small glass room where I had come apart in a wedding slip ten days before.
Now the harbor slid away behind us, and the lights of the town shrank to a few gold dots on the black.
Brennan stood at the wheel with one hand on it and one hand on the throttle.
He had changed into a dark T-shirt, and the screens lit his face blue from below.
"Come here," he said.
"I'm here."
"Stand where I can see you."
I stood by the chart table, a slanted wooden desk bolted to the wall beside the wheel.
A paper chart lay on it under a brass weight, with the long hook of the Cape drawn in blue.
Out the windows there was only water and sky, and one far red light blinking on a buoy.
The engines were a steady hum that came up through my feet.
"Is it all right?" I said. "The boat?"
"She's steering herself. I'm just keeping her honest."
"Can you look away?"
