Chapter 18: Daylight
On Friday I took the letter to the Dory Anne and laid it on the blue blanket between us.
The sun was high over MacMillan Pier, and it came down the hatch in a bright square that fell across the bunk.
Brennan read the page twice, sitting on the edge of the bed in his undershirt.
He put it down.
"They're asking you to pay them back for a trip they stole," he said.
"Yes."
"On your card."
"Yes," I said.
"You don't have to answer this."
"I'm not going to. I'm going to pin it to a board and look at it."
He nodded slowly.
He reached for his phone on the table, thumbed it open, and held it out to me with the screen lit.
"What's this?" I said.
"Shea. A dozen messages since Tuesday. I haven't opened them."
I looked at the little gray bubbles stacked up under her name.
I looked at the stack of unread texts.
"You're showing me."
"I'm showing you the whole thing. Read them if you want to. Or I'll delete them while you watch."
"Why?" I said.
"Because you said it in Furnas. That if she cried, you thought I'd go." His voice was even. "I don't want you wondering. I want you to be able to look."
I took the phone and held it for a moment.
Then I turned it face down on the table and slid it out of reach.
"No," I said.
"No?"
"Keep your phone. I don't need to read it." I climbed onto the bunk on my knees. "I stopped waiting for you to leave on Thursday, somewhere around the second oyster. I only noticed just now."
