Chapter 7: Rodrick's Coat
Dalton lifted one hand, and thirty wolves stepped back from the MacAlister porch at once.
It was the quietest way I had ever seen a fight end.
"Nobody here is going to bleed tonight," he said to the yard. "Edwin came up this mountain on his own, and I'm sorry for it."
My father opened his mouth, and Dalton looked at him.
He closed it again.
"Tegan," Dalton said, in the voice I knew, the warm one. "Change back for me. Please. I just want to look at your face."
I didn't know how.
For four years I had not had a wolf to change from, and now she was all of me, and she did not want to leave.
Then I felt warmth along my side, and the grey wolf beside me shifted.
Rodrick went down on his haunches, and his bones rolled under his fur.
In the span of a breath there was a man crouched in the snow where the wolf had been.
He was naked, and he did not seem to notice.
The lean man threw him a heavy wool coat from the porch.
Rodrick put it on without a glance at anyone.
"Breathe," he said to me, low. "Think of a room you like. Go into it."
I thought of the kitchen at home, with my mother's bread cooling on the sill.
The fur went out of me.
I was kneeling in the snow, naked, with the cold biting every inch of my skin and nowhere to hide.
Rodrick was on me before the cold finished its first bite.
He pulled his coat open and wrapped me in it, one side over my shoulders and the other around my back.
His hands closed on my upper arms to hold it there.
His palms were enormous, and his thumbs pressed into the hollows of my shoulders.
