Chapter 18: What Cade Asked
The sale barn on Highway 191 smells of manure, coffee and wet wool, and every rancher in the county was on its benches that Saturday.
Rod sat beside me on the second row with his knee against mine.
He had not said a word since we parked.
His thumb had found the inside of my wrist, right over the pulse, and stayed there.
It was a small touch, and I could feel it all the way down to my boots.
"You don't have to be here," he said.
"Dell asked me to come," I said.
"Dell asked you to be seen," he said.
"Same thing," I said.
Below us the ring was a half circle of sawdust with a gate at each end.
The auctioneer sat in his box with a microphone and a cup of coffee, and the first Reinholt heifers came through the gate at ten.
Cade was leading them in himself.
He wore a clean shirt and no hat.
Einar had not come.
I had heard he had not left his house since the Rendezvous, and that nobody had called.
Cade left the heifers to the ring men and climbed the benches.
He stopped at the end of our row.
The buyers on either side of us went quiet, and then pretended to read their cards.
