Chapter 11: Tomorrow

Linnea's POV

I woke on Ingrid's sofa with a blanket tucked around me and a headache behind my eyes.

It was dark outside, and the clock on her mantel said ten.

"There she is," Ingrid said from the armchair, a mug in both hands.

"You slept all day. The tea had something in it for the nerves. I'm sorry, you looked wrecked."

"You should have woken me."

"You needed it." She came and sat beside me. "Lin. He's going to tell you something tonight. Whatever it is, I'm on your side."

I looked at her.

Her face was open and worried, and I loved her, and I was too tired to think about why my stomach had gone cold.

"Okay," I said.

I hugged her, and her cuff dug into my shoulder blade, and I went back to my room.

He was waiting at the threshold of the east wing.

He hadn't crossed it.

He stood on the dark side of the arch in a plain grey shirt, with his hands at his sides.

"Term one," he said.

"I know."

"I said I'd tell you tonight."

"I know that, too."

"Linnea, it's..." He closed his eyes. "It's bad. It's worse than anything I've said to you."

"Then say it."

"When I tell you, I think you'll leave. I don't know if I can stop you."

I thought about the Moon Stone, and the sofa, and the cold in my stomach.

I thought, I've heard a lot of bad news at the worst time.

I walked up to him and put both hands flat on his chest.

"Tomorrow," I said.

"You don't know what..."

"I don't. And I'm tired of finding out in front of people."

I looked up at him.

"Give me tonight. One night that's mine. Tomorrow you tell me everything, and I'll take it."
