Chapter 15: A Grey Wolf on the Road

They held the hearing at the lodge that afternoon, in the great hall, with the Feast tables still standing.

Gunnar wanted it public. I understood why when I saw the benches fill.

Two hundred wolves wanted to see the girl who had been refused, the claimer who had been attacked, and the Alpha between them.

Phones were up again.

Ingrid sat in a chair at the foot of the dais with a blanket on her shoulders and a cup of tea in both hands.

Her scratches had been cleaned, and they looked worse for it.

"Tell the Council what you saw," Gunnar said gently.

"I was walking back from the Feast around three," Ingrid said. "I needed air. On the lodge road a grey wolf came out of the trees."

She stopped, and wiped her eye.

"There is only one grey wolf in Pinewater. I know her scent. I know her, and she went for my face."

A murmur ran down the benches.

"Linnea Aaberg's wolf has been awake eight days," Gunnar said. "She is unmated, unanswered, and in distress. No one blames her. But a danger to the Luna is a danger to the pack."

I stood up.

"I was in my grandmother's farmhouse at three," I said. "Nine miles from here."

"A wolf covers nine miles in under an hour, Miss Aaberg."

"Then ask the gate."

I hadn't planned to say it. Anders had put it in my ear in the truck that morning, and it had stuck.

"The lodge road has one gate," Anders said, standing beside me. "There is a wolf on it every night. Last night it was that one."

He pointed at the lanky young wolf by the side door, the same one who had knocked me flat in the training yard.

The young wolf went red to his ears.

Gunnar smiled thinly. "Speak, then, boy."
