Chapter 19: The Yard at Dawn

Roan's POV

I felt her fall.

I was sitting on the floor of my office with my back against the wall and the lamps burning down, and a cold, bitter rush went up my own leg and took my breath.

Then it was gone.

White light flashed behind my eyes, hot and clean, and I heard her wolf roar through the bond for the first time in my life.

I stood up.

I had told Ilsa I could not get through that door without starting a war.

I had been wrong.

A war was already started, and it was being fought in my father's rooms, and I was in a locked office doing nothing.

My wolf came up under my skin and she was no longer slow.

I put my shoulder to the door, and the lock tore out of the frame.

Four Crown Guard stood in the corridor.

The first one drew a blade, and I took it out of his hand and threw him into the wall.

The second one went down with a knee in his gut.

The third and fourth stepped back, because they had known me since I was a boy, and I looked at them, and they put their hands up.

"Your Majesty," one of them whispered. "Orders are orders."

"Whose orders?" I asked.

He swallowed. He had no answer.

I walked past them and down the stairs.

By the time I reached the yard, the torches had been lit.

A gallows stood in the middle of it, the great frame the old kings had used for traitors, which I had never seen raised in my life.

Twelve nooses hung from the beam.

Harlan stood on the platform with his hands bound, and the eleven rogues stood beside him, shivering in their shirts.
