Chapter 13: Terms at Dawn
Ewan gave me his flannel shirt because my dress was in two pieces on the floor.
It came down to my knees and smelled of woodsmoke and him.
I rolled the sleeves and tied my hair back with a bootlace.
"Stay behind me," he said.
"No."
He looked at me for a long second.
"Beside me," he said.
"Better."
We opened the door together.
The cold came in first, and then the sound, a low growl from a hundred throats that rolled across the clearing and stopped when I stepped onto the porch.
Not one of them moved closer.
I felt my wolf stand up in my chest and look at them.
The wolves in the front row dropped their eyes.
Carys came forward alone across the frost, carrying the tank in both arms.
Her cream coat was buttoned wrong.
Her mascara had run and dried in two gray lines.
"Bri," she said. "Rafe sent me with his terms."
"Of course he did."
"The ring, and you at the compound gate by noon. Alone." She swallowed. "Then Alden gets his oxygen back."
"That tank is empty."
"They took his mask off for the drive."
"Why?"
"So you'd see this," Carys said, and held it up.
Ewan made a sound in his chest that I felt through the porch boards.
I held up my hand to him, and he stopped.
"Look at me, Carys," I said.
She looked.
Her hands were shaking so hard the tube swung against the metal.
She had sat on my bed at eleven years old and braided my hair through a thunderstorm.
She had put a spoon of wolfsbane to my grandfather's mouth.
