Chapter 21: A Day, Doyle
They carried my grandfather upstairs and laid him on the bed, and the nurse sent everyone out.
I stayed in the hall with my burned palm wrapped in a dish towel.
The lodge was silent.
Forty wolves stood around the house, and not one of them made a sound.
After a while the nurse came out and shut the door behind her.
"He's breathing on his own," she said. "He said the last word of the oath. It held him up."
"Will he wake?"
"Tonight, maybe. He's tired, not dying. Not yet."
I put my forehead against the wall.
Ewan was not in the hall.
He had been beside me on the stairs, carrying the old man's weight with the others.
Then he had set him down and walked outside without a word.
I found him at the end of the porch with his hands on the rail.
The sun was up over the pasture, and the grass was white with frost.
"Hey," I said.
"Hey."
"You've been somewhere else since five o'clock."
"I'm here."
"Ewan."
He didn't turn.
I laid my hand on his back, and he didn't lean into it, and he didn't move away.
"What did my grandfather say to you last night?"
He went very still.
"Who says he said anything?"
"You said you slept a little. You didn't. Your side of the bed was cold when I woke."
"Briony."
"Tell me."
"I can't."
The word fell between us, and for a moment I couldn't speak.
"You can't?"
"I gave him my word." He turned around at last. His eyes were red. "I'd tell you everything, if it were mine to tell. It isn't. And I think he's going to tell you himself. I think he's going to do it today."
