Chapter 29: The Verdict
The envoy didn't wait for the nine packs to sit.
He walked into the middle of the sand with his notebook open.
He read the verdict standing over Rafe, in a voice that carried to the top row.
"The Council finds that Rafe Kingsley used a mate mark to starve a Hartwell wolf and feed his own."
Rafe lay on the sand with his broken arm held to his chest.
He did not look up.
"The Council finds that he continued his father's ledger and rejected a mate in order to kill her."
He lifted his eyes to the north tier.
"It finds that he ordered silver fired at a challenger inside the Bowl."
The envoy turned a page.
"The Kingsley name is struck from the seat of Redmoor. The Kingsley seat is dissolved. The Kingsley land is held in trust by the Council until a pack votes for it."
A murmur ran around the tiers.
"Rafe Kingsley will be taken to the Council's keep, where he will answer for every woman in that book."
Two guards in gray coats came down the steps.
They took Rafe under the arms and hauled him up.
At the edge of the sand he twisted around and found me.
"You were nothing, Bri," he said hoarsely. "You were nothing without me."
"I was wolfless for six years," I said. "I was never nothing."
He opened his mouth.
One of the guards put a hand over it, and they dragged him up the tunnel and out of the torchlight.
I thought I would feel something big when he went.
I felt tired, and a little empty, and glad.
"The five elders who signed the ledger," the envoy said, "are removed from their seats and from any council of Redmoor, today."
Not one of them argued.
