Chapter 15: The Snowmobile
Alexis's POV
I woke before dawn with the cold side of the bed against my ribs.
I knew where she had gone before I opened my eyes.
I could feel her.
That was still the strangest part.
She was half a mile up the ridge, and she was a heavy gray ache in my chest that was not mine.
I lay there for a minute and let it be hers.
Then I put on my boots, took the long way through the pines, and stood at the edge of the cemetery trees without going in.
She was kneeling at my brother's stone in the snow with her hand flat on the top of it.
She did not cry.
She told him things in a low steady voice, and the wind took most of it.
I stayed behind a spruce with my hat in my fist.
I did not tell her I had watched.
I let her come home at noon with her face scrubbed raw by the wind.
I let her sleep through the afternoon with her head on Remy's arm.
At dusk I wheeled the snowmobile out from the shed and revved it twice on the porch.
"Get your parka," I said. "Not the pretty one. The warm one."
She looked at me over the rim of her tea.
"Where are we going?"
"Somewhere that isn't a grave."
She was quiet a moment, and I felt her understand that I knew.
Then she put the mug down.
"Headlamp?"
"No headlamp. Moon's enough."
She climbed on behind me and wrapped both arms around my waist, and her cheek came down against my back.
We ran along the shore of the lake with the snow blue and silent and the stars hanging low.
