Chapter 10: Terms
Nuala's POV
At six in the morning I came downstairs and found Lawson Bexley at my brother's stove.
He was in last night's dress shirt with the sleeves rolled, cracking eggs into a pan, and my five other brothers sat in a row along the kitchen island watching him in silence.
"He's been here since one," the twin who talked said into his coffee.
"He's passed the dog question and the door question."
"We're on the hard one."
"What's the hard one?" I asked.
"What he does when he's scared."
"I make a list," Lawson said, without turning around.
"I've been told that's unhealthy."
Brendan pushed a plate across the island and a chair out with his foot.
I sat.
Lawson set a perfect omelet in front of me, folded in thirds, and went back for his own.
It was the best egg I had ever eaten.
I told him so with my mouth full, and his ears went red again.
"I have terms," I said.
The kitchen went quiet.
"One," I said, holding up a finger.
"Nine months, like you said on the stage, and not a day sooner."
I held up another finger.
"Two is that nothing you give me costs more than twenty dollars."
"If I can't buy it back myself, it's a transaction."
"Three is no cameras," I said.
"No photographers and no phones at the table, because whatever this is gets to be small."
"And four?" Lawson asked quietly.
"You call me Nuala," I said.
"Everyone else is going to call me whatever is useful to them, and you don't."
"Nuala," he said.
He said it carefully, the way he had on the loading dock.
