I came home to Tiburon at noon in yesterday's green dress, and six brothers looked carefully at six different walls.
"Not one word," I said.
"We didn't say anything," the twin who talked said to the ceiling.
"We're being supportive."
The fifth brother started to cry, and I walked past him and put the kettle on.
At one o'clock a gray sedan came up the drive.
Fergus saw it from the window and said, "It's him."
By the time I reached the hall, the six of them had formed a wall across the front door.
They didn't say anything.
They didn't have to.
Through the glass I could see Edmund Radcliffe standing on the porch alone, in a raincoat, with his hat in both hands.
He looked ten years older than he had at the party.
"Let him in," I said.
"Nuala," Brendan said.
"He didn't do it," I said.
"Let him in."
The wall opened.
I sat him in the kitchen at the long scrubbed table with a mug of tea he did not drink.
