On Thursday night Soren stood behind his own chair at the dinner table and did not sit down.
The whole family was there.
My mother had made pot roast again, and my stepfather had said grace in his nine words, and Kasper was carving.
Eero sat in Soren's old place beside the old man.
Nobody had told him to.
He had been handed the co-op's phone number that morning, with Soren's whole customer book, because my stepfather had said, in front of the kitchen, "Eero will sell the berries."
Eero had said, "I don't know how."
My stepfather had said, "You'll learn."
Soren held the back of his chair with both hands.
He had taken his name off the co-op's list himself.
I knew because the buyer had told Kasper, and Kasper had told Eero, and by lunchtime it was all over the marsh.
