Bronwen's POV
I told him no on the second night, in the car, and I told it badly.
He had been steady for a day and a half.
He ate what was put in front of him and went to the yard.
On the Monday he sat with his uncle in the back of a restaurant on Bleecker Street for an hour and came out with nothing in his face.
I watched him do it from the passenger seat of the gray car, two doors down, with my hands under my arms.
It was the most frightening thing I had ever seen a man do.
At dark he came out of the mill with a leather bag.
"Get in," Valentine said. "We're going to the lodge."
"What lodge?" I said.
"My family's, near Old Forge. It's two hours. There's nobody within a mile, and the road is mine."
"I have a shift tonight."
"Not tonight," he said. "Ignazio's men aren't fools, and I can't keep track of him and you both."
"You can't keep track of me," I said.
"Bronwen."
"I'm not going," I said.
"It's until Sunday," he said.
"I'm going to the ward," I said.
He had both hands on the wheel, and he looked straight ahead through the glass.
