Chapter 15: Not a Sound

He came on the fourth night as a visitor.

I knew it was him before I saw him, because the man in the gray cap stood up from his bench.

It was a quarter past one, and the ward was dim and humming.

Room two had a new patient, a woman of sixty with a husband who would not go home.

I had been in and out with the cloth and the water for an hour.

I came out into the corridor, and Valentine Corvino stood at the far end in his overcoat with his hands folded in front of him.

He did not come toward me.

I looked at the charge nurse's station, and she studied her chart with great attention.

"Visiting hours are over," I said when I reached him.

"I was told family could sit," Valentine said.

"Whose family?"

"Room two. The man has a son who couldn't come. I said I'd keep him company."

"You don't know the man in room two," I said.

"I do now. He drove a bread truck for thirty-eight years, and he has been telling me about a transmission."

I looked at him.

His face was grave.

His eyes were not grave at all.

"You said not to come," I said.

"I haven't touched you. I haven't spoken to you. I've sat in a plastic chair for forty minutes talking about a bread truck, and he has not once asked who I am."

I breathed in through my nose.

"Go back to the bread truck," I said.

He went.

I stood in the corridor and watched his back.
