Chapter 10: His Terms

I stood on the dorm steps with my coat open and read Keeley's message a third time.

"Dani and Marlo are on shift until nine."

It was in black and white.

It was a plan.

"Send me the whole thread," I said. "Every message. Now."

Ellis hesitated.

"If I send it, I'm finished."

"You were finished the day you started."

He sent it.

My phone buzzed over and over, forty messages and then forty more.

I forwarded every one to Dani and to myself, and I watched the little bars fill.

"Now," I said. "Listen carefully, because I'm only going to say this once."

He sat up straight.

"I don't forgive you."

"I know."

"I'm not saying it so you'll try to earn it. I'm saying it so you never think this is what that looks like."

"Okay."

"You are going to tell the panel," I said. "Yourself. In public, in front of the dean and everyone in the hall, with your own mouth. You'll say what you did and who you did it for. You won't hide behind a screenshot, and you won't ask me to say it for you."

"And if they expel me?"

"Then they expel you," I said. "You'll have told the truth, which is more than you did in the professor's office."

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he nodded.

"Okay," he said, and his voice cracked on it. "I'll do it."

"And you stay away from me until then."

"Marlo." He rubbed his face. "Can I say one thing?"
