Chapter 13: Learning Out Loud

The main hall held six hundred seats, and by nine-thirty on Saturday there were no empty ones.

Students stood along the side walls with their coffees.

Two boys sat on the stage steps, and a girl I knew from Statistics had brought a folding stool.

Dani held my elbow as we walked down the center aisle.

"Look straight ahead," she said. "I'll do the glaring."

At the front, a long table sat under the lights.

The dean sat in the middle with a professor on each side, and at the far end a tall gray-haired man was adjusting his reading glasses.

Keeley's father did not look at me once.

Micah had saved us three seats in the second row.

He had put on a tie, and it was crooked.

"You look terrible," I whispered.

"It's a very serious tie," he whispered back. "It's allowed to look terrible."

Dani laughed, one short breath through her nose, and some of the weight left my shoulders.

Ellis stood against the back wall in the leather jacket, with his hands in his pockets.

He had promised to stay away until the panel, so I didn't turn around.

I knew exactly where he was anyway.

At ten, the dean tapped a microphone.

"The Harlow Transfer Scholarship offers one seat at Southern University and full tuition," she said. "Each finalist will present an original essay and the materials behind it. Our first speaker is Keeley Chauncy."
