Chapter 23: Who Is Your Notebook For
Marlo's POV
Room 214 held forty desks, and by ten o'clock on Saturday there were sixty-three people in it.
They sat on the floor, the windowsills and the radiator.
The bagel boy had brought a bagel, which he held in one hand and tried to hide.
In the front row, in the very first seat, sat Ellis Forbes with a brand-new notebook and a pen that worked.
He looked straight at the whiteboard.
He did not look at me.
I decided I would let that count for something.
"Okay," I said. "Nobody gets my notes today."
A groan went around the room, and I waited for it to end.
"You get this instead." I turned and wrote on the board: "What will they ask?"
"That's it?" the bagel boy said.
"That's the whole method. Before you write a single thing in a lecture, you ask yourself what the professor would put on the exam, and you put a star next to it. When you're wrong, you cross it out and write why. That's the notebook."
"That's so simple," said a girl on the radiator.
"It's boring," I said. "It's also hard, because you have to listen with your whole face."
Someone laughed.
"Take out a sheet of paper. We're going to do the umbrella example. All of you, from nothing, and you can't look at your neighbors."
They did.
For forty minutes, sixty-three people made up their own umbrellas.
One girl came up with a bridge, and one boy came up with a goat.
The goat won.
Ellis's example involved a motorcycle, and it was wrong in three places, and he crossed out each one himself and wrote why.
