Chapter 11: The Seat at the Owner's Table
Gideon stood at the center of the council chamber floor with his hands behind his back and told the councilors that Alex Jin had no standing in this building.
Alex waited in the corridor outside the main chamber, holding the hearing notice.
When Caspian rounded the corner, Alex held the paper out to him.
'Read the owner's name,' Alex said. 'Aloud. Before they take their seats.'
Caspian took the paper.
He read the line twice.
His thumb pressed the corner flat.
'That's the name on a financial disclosure form I signed without reading,' he said.
The pack secretary had followed them down the corridor with her tablet.
She wrote it down.
Caspian's signature was now tied to the shell company in the record, and he had put it there himself.
The doors opened.
The councilors filed in and took their chairs along the raised bench.
Gideon was already in the center aisle seat, a single folder squared in front of him on the alpha's table.
He had laid the table for two.
The petitioner's bench sat empty below it.
Every councilor looked at the empty bench, then at the two place settings, and understood who was supposed to sit where.
Caspian walked past the alpha's table without slowing.
He set his folder down on the petitioner's bench.
He sat beside Alex.
The thread came up through Alex's wrists first.
Gold light climbed out of his pulse points where they rested on his knees.
It snapped across the space between him and Caspian and caught on Caspian's chest.
The light ran from Alex's throat next, a second thread that crossed the room and did not thin.
Every councilor saw it.
The midday sun through the high windows did nothing to wash it out.
Alex kept his hands still on his knees and let it burn.
He had spent the exile learning to let it hurt without moving.
Gideon stared at the threads.
His jaw worked once.
He had not expected the bond to be visible in his own chamber.
The room's attention came off Alex's exile record and settled on Gideon.
His own nephew had just refused his table in public, and the bond had followed him there.
