Chapter 17: Banishment
The song ended.
When the last voice stopped, the vault was so quiet that I could hear the soft tick of Velun's gills.
He lifted his head.
His face had not changed, and everything in it had.
"That is all," he said. "That is the whole sentence."
"Velun."
"It is only a song."
"It's not only a song."
"No." He tried to smile. "It is not."
The crowd of the Deep began to drift apart.
They did not look at him as they went.
A banished man is no longer shouted at, I understood, or pitied.
He is only no longer there.
One old man in a blue shawl stopped beside us, and his gold eyes were wet.
He put two fingers to Velun's brow and went on.
The eldest spoke from her throne.
"The machine from the surface will be returned to the air," she said.
"It fired on the court, and it will answer to the law of its own shore."
She raised her hand.
The current that held the stuck sub let go.
I watched it rise, spinning slowly, its lights swinging across the coral.
Behind the acrylic dome, Brent's face came and went in the glare.
He had stopped shouting.
