Chapter 11: The Roof
On Friday night, with the showcase eighteen hours away, Mo Chenyao dragged a mattress up a fire ladder onto the roof of the old mill.
He spread a blanket over it.
Yu stood on the tarred roof with a bottle of red wine in each hand and watched him.
The sky over Yangpu was low and orange.
A water tower stood against it, rusted and quiet, and beyond the chimneys the whole river curved in a line of lights.
"You live here?" said Yu.
"I live downstairs. This is where I come when I want to be alone."
"I'm not alone."
"No," said Mo. "That's the problem."
He took the bottles, set them in the corner of the parapet, and turned round with his hands on his hips.
The wind had pulled his hair out of its tuck.
His shirt was open at the neck, and the mole at the corner of his mouth was dark in the light of the sky.
"Everyone's gone home," he said. "Jiang's with his wife. Your assistant is eating soup at your office."
"Tomorrow we do the stage. I want one thing before that."
"Name it."
"Slowly," said Mo. "I want it slow. I want to know what you look like when you're not trying to win."
Yu put down his jacket on the parapet, next to the bottles, and undid his cuffs.
"Come here."
Mo came.
Yu took his face in both hands and kissed him, on the roof, with the wind in their clothes.
It was a long kiss.
It took them both a while to remember they were undressing.
His fingers got the shirt open and pushed it back off the shoulders.
Mo shrugged out of it with a shiver and began on Yu's buttons, working down, kissing the chest as he went.
