Chapter 24: Two Phones
At two in the morning the lamp in the penthouse was low, and two men sat on one couch with a phone each.
Mo Chenyao had his feet in Yu's lap.
He wore Yu's shirt and nothing else, with the sleeves rolled to the elbow.
His glasses were pushed up into his hair and his tongue was between his teeth.
Yu held the black phone.
"Ready?" said Mo.
"I think so."
"You look terrified," said Mo.
"I've never done this with the person in the room."
"Nobody has," said Mo. "That's why it's going to be good."
He typed.
Yu's phone sounded in his hand, two low notes, loud in the quiet room, and he laughed, shortly, because he could not help it.
He opened the bottle.
"whale. are you there? the tide's out and I can't sleep."
Yu looked up.
Mo was watching him over the top of his own phone with enormous, unprotected eyes.
"Answer me," Mo said.
Yu typed with his thumbs, slowly, for the first time in his life with nothing to hide.
"I'm here, cat. I'm not going anywhere. I'm sitting about two feet from you with your feet on my lap."
Mo's phone chimed.
He read it aloud, in a voice that went soft in the middle.
"Is that a threat?"
"It's the opposite."
"Good." He typed again. "tell me something you've never said."
Yu typed.
"I'm in love with you. In two voices. I'd like to keep both."
Mo read it.
He put the phone down on the cushion, very carefully, face up.
Then he moved across the couch on his knees and took Yu's phone out of his hand.
He set it on top of his own and straddled his lap.
"That's cheating," he said.
