Chapter 19: Give Me an Order

Ja-heon stood in the doorway with his hood in his fist.

"Seon-woo."

"Four hours."

Seon-woo turned a page of the ledger on the table, though Ja-heon could see he was not reading it.

"Sun-ok's pigeon reached me at noon.

"I have had all afternoon to think of what to say to you."

"And?"

"I have nothing."

Seon-woo shut the book.

He stood, crossed the room, and took hold of the front of Ja-heon's coat in both hands.

Ja-heon braced for the shouting.

Seon-woo put his forehead against Ja-heon's breastbone instead.

"I gave you an order," he said into the cloth.

"You broke it."

"Yes."

"I am so glad."

Ja-heon wrapped his arms around him.

Seon-woo was thin through the shirt and shaking, and Ja-heon held him until the shaking stopped.

"I have been giving orders for seven years," Seon-woo said after a while.

"To elders.

"To a hall full of men twice my age.

"To you.

"Tomorrow I will give a great many more, in front of every sect.

"Some of them will be wrong, and people will die of them."

"Seon-woo."

"I am so tired of being the one who says."

He lifted his head.

His eyes were dry and enormous.

"Tonight," Seon-woo said, "I want you to give me one."

Ja-heon did not move.

"An order.

"Any order.

"Say it, and I will do it.

"I want to know what it is to be told."
