Chapter 23: Ash

By midnight the pyre had burned down to a bed of red coals, and the county had gone home.

The hands kept watch at the foot of the hill and had been told to stay there.

Ash drifted over the burned slope in the dark and settled on my hair and my father's hat.

I stood at the edge of the glow with soot on my hands and the heat of the embers on my face.

I had lit the Easter fire of the Wiedenfelds, and I had not stopped shaking since.

"Tilly," Cade said behind me.

I turned and jumped.

He caught me against his chest and did not stagger.

My arms went around his neck and my legs around his waist, and I kissed him with the taste of smoke in my mouth.

He kissed me back so hard that my hat fell off.

"You did it," he said into my mouth. "You stood there and you did it."

"I did it."

"Three thousand people."

"I don't care about the three thousand," I said. "I care about you. Get these off me."

I fumbled at his belt with one hand.

He laughed, and carried me down the slope with his hands under my ass, and my fingers got the buckle undone.

I opened his jeans and reached inside.

He was hard already, hot and thick against my knuckles, and I pulled him free.

"Tilly, we're on a hill," he said.

"Everyone's gone. It's ours."

I tore my own jeans open, and he stopped walking and let me wriggle them down my hips.

My boots stayed on, one leg freed and the other tangled.

I did not care.

I rubbed the head of his cock through my wet underwear, and then pulled it aside.

I notched him against my entrance.

His knees nearly went.

"Put me on you," I said.

He lowered me an inch.

I took him with a gasp, slowly, until my weight hung entirely on the thick stretch of him.

My legs wrapped around his waist, and my arms locked behind his neck.

He held me by the hips, high against his stomach.

I could feel him in my belly.

"Walk," I said.

"What?"

"Carry me. Walk."

He walked.

Each step drove him up into me, a long heavy lift and drop, and I cried out against his throat.
