Chapter 6: The King's Office

I stepped back.

I don't know why I obeyed him when I hadn't obeyed anyone in a year, but my feet moved before my pride did.

The elevator opened at the far end of the lobby.

Ansel walked out in his shirtsleeves with his jacket over one arm, and the whole hall rearranged itself around him.

Wardens straightened and guests went quiet.

Brant's two men dropped their eyes to the floor.

"Colter," Ansel said.

"Your Majesty." Brant's voice cracked on the second word. "A misunderstanding. I was greeting an old acquaintance."

"You were putting a hand on a Warden in my lobby."

"She threw me."

"She had reason to." Ansel stopped within reach of him and spoke without raising his voice at all. "Council protocol says the Alphas arrive the day before the sitting. You are five days early."

"My father wished to settle in."

"Then your father can settle in on the twenty-second floor, in the guest wing, and stay there. You may use the dining room. You will not use my lobby."

"We have every right to."

"You have the rights I give you." Ansel looked at him. "Warden Rowe is under the Crown's protection from the moment she took the oath. If you lay a hand on her again, I will treat it as a hand on me."

Nobody breathed.

The woman in green watched Ansel's face with great interest.
