Chapter 7: The Roof Run

Nobody told me anything for the rest of the day.

Ansel went into a meeting with the Colters and didn't come out.

The Hollow carried on as if nothing had happened, which I understood was a kindness.

At dusk Dessa found me on my bunk staring at the ceiling and hauled me up by the elbow.

"Roof," she said.

"I don't want to go to the roof."

"Nobody wants to go to the roof. That's why it works."

She took me up four flights of stairs and through a steel door.

The roof of Vane Tower had a long running track around its edge, with a low glass wall and the whole city lit up beyond it.

The wind was cold and tasted like rain.

Three Wardens were already out there in wolf shape, loping the track in wide, lazy loops.

"When did you last shift?" Dessa asked.

I thought about it.

"The night of the ceremony. I shifted after the rejection and ran until I fell down."

"That's a year."

"Yes."

"A wolf with no pack link doesn't lose her wolf. She just forgets she has one." Dessa pulled off her jacket. "Strip behind the glass. I'll hold your clothes. I've seen everything, trust me."

I took off my clothes in the cold with my teeth chattering.

Then I stopped trying to think.

The change came up out of me, a year late and all at once.

It didn't hurt.

It tore through my skin, and my bones slid and lengthened, and the city turned into a field of smells.

When it was over I was standing on four legs on the cold concrete, and I was enormous.
