Chapter 8: Say One Word

I pulled on my clothes behind the glass, put Ansel's coat back in his hands, and took the elevator down.

He rode with me and said nothing.

I was grateful.

The lobby was already full.

Wardens lined the walls, and the guard stood stiff at the black desk.

Through the glass doors I could see a mud-spattered pack truck idling at the curb with its engine running.

My family came through the doors one at a time.

My five brothers came first, big and silent, in their pack jackets.

My mother came after them in her green cardigan, with her braid over one shoulder and her hands clasped tight in front of her.

My father came last.

Gregory Ludlow walked into the Lycan King's lobby with the same heavy stride he used in every room.

Then he saw me, and he stopped.

For one moment his whole face came apart.

I had never seen that happen to him.

Then it closed again, flat and heavy and unreadable, the Alpha's face, the one he had worn at the circle.

He looked at me and said nothing.

Something in me went very still.

"No," I said.

Nobody moved.

"No," I said again, louder. "Not this time. You don't get to do that to me in front of people again."

"Brinley," my mother whispered.

"Say something, Dad."

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

"You stood there for a year," I said. "You let me walk past you in the hall for a year, and you never turned your head. I put a plate in front of you every morning and you ate around me. Say something. Anything. I don't care what it is."
