Darek lifted Brannoch's hand off his cheek.
"Not tomorrow," he said.
"Now.
I want the clan to hear it."
Every torch in the ring seemed to lean closer.
The elders had stopped halfway down the path, and the hunters were turning back, one by one.
Brannoch smiled.
"By all means."
Darek looked across the stones, and for the first time since the glen he looked straight at me.
I had no idea what he'd say.
I had no right to know.
"She is my mate," he said.
"The mark lit at the moon-fire, and I knew what it was before the clan did.
I'll call her that in the square, and in the ring, and in front of you.
Tuck is my son.
You'll take neither."
A sound went through the crowd, low as wind.
Brannoch's smile did not fall.
It simply stopped moving.
"A hunter who refuses the chief's judgment on a cub," he said to the elders, mildly.
"What does the old law say?"
The white-browed elder cleared his throat.
"Dominance challenge.
