Chapter 24: The Ledger

Kari wrote the names on the back of a pizza box and propped it against the workbench lamp.

DA. Doctor. Dominic's father. Maeve.

"Four names," she said. "Four days."

"The doctor and Dominic's father are two more dinners," I said. "We can't reach them all before Monday."

"And the DA?"

"The DA is the lever. If he eats and the whole town watches, there's no hearing."

"Then he eats."

"He won't come near my food."

"He doesn't have to know it's yours," Kari said.

My father sat on the bunk with his hands between his knees.

He had brought my mother home at nine that night, put her to bed, and driven back without a word. He had not said Nan's name or Maeve's since we left the kitchen.

"She looked at you like a stranger," he said finally. "Your mother."

"I know."

"She isn't herself. She hasn't been for months. That doctor makes her cry every time she walks out of his office." He stared at the floor. "I thought it was the cancer."

"It's partly the cancer."

"I should have asked her what was wrong."

"Dad."

"I'm saying it now."

I put my hand on his shoulder, and he covered it with his.

Dominic stood in the doorway with his car keys.

"I can get the list," he said.

We all looked at him.

"Maeve is on Channel 4 at noon tomorrow," he said. "A town hall, a sit-down interview about the victims' families. They announced it in the paper. She'll be in the studio for two hours at least."
