Chapter 4: Sick Freaks
Maeve had been in that hall, and she had told me she would never speak to me again.
I wanted to drive to her school that minute.
I had forty dollars, no car and a basement room paid through Saturday.
So I did the one thing left that did not cost money.
I went to a doctor.
The campus clinic took walk-ins.
The doctor was young and kind, and he gave me a paper cup of water before I said a word.
"Tell me what's been happening."
I told him all of it, from the door on my hand to the box in the rain.
He listened without writing anything down.
When I finished he said it was natural to doubt yourself after being shut out by everyone you trusted.
My eyes filled for the first time in days.
"Could you watch something?" I held out my phone. "I don't understand what everyone else sees."
He took the phone and pressed play.
He watched until the end of the clip.
Then his face changed.
He shoved the phone back at me and hit the red button on his desk.
"Security. Get her out of here."
"What? Why?"
"We treat patients here. We don't have time for sick freaks like you."
I gripped the edge of his desk.
"Then tell me what's wrong with me. Please. Just tell me what's wrong."
