Chapter 5: The Coffee Order

I woke in a guest room with a lock on the inside, and the first thing I did was check that it was still locked.

It was.

The second thing I did was look at my wrist.

The silver had faded to a thin line, and the burn was gone.

Dane was in the kitchen, making eggs in a wide black pan.

"Ask," he said, without turning around.

"What's the clause?"

"It has to be read aloud before witnesses of both clans. That's how the Concord makes it live. The next gathering is Saturday, at the Midsummer fire."

"So you won't tell me."

"I can't tell you," Dane said. "If I say it in private, it's only gossip, and the Elder can say it was never read. In front of witnesses, it can't be taken back."

"That sounds convenient."

"It's inconvenient." He slid a plate across. "I would have liked to read it to you tonight."

Penny had slept on the couch with the gray dog on her feet.

She woke up, looked at Dane, looked at me, and said, "Is he still being nice?"

"Eat your eggs," I said.

I drove to the clinic, and I worked an eight hour shift without telling anyone where I had slept.

At five o'clock I did the thing I had been thinking about all day.

I drove to the Copper Kettle on Division, where the foxes drank.

Tobin had worked behind its bar for two years, because the clan owned the building.
