Chapter 20: The Grave
Wells read the texts over my shoulder.
"No," he said.
"I didn't ask you."
"You were going to."
"I was going to tell you I'm going."
He looked at me for a long time.
"Then I'm driving," he said. "And I'm parking at the gate. And if he touches you, I'm not a planner anymore."
"What are you?"
"I'll figure it out on the way."
My mother is buried at Holy Cross, on a little slope under a maple tree.
Her stone is gray and plain. She picked it herself, from a catalog, in the hospital.
"Nothing fancy," she said. "I'm not the one getting married."
Wells parked the van at the gate on Saturday morning and turned off the engine.
"I can see the whole hill from here," he said.
"I know."
"I'm going to be looking at it the entire time."
"I know, Wells."
I walked up the path alone.
Kellan was already there.
He was standing at the foot of her grave in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, no tie, no watch.
He'd brought her flowers.
