Chapter 4: Vows

Larissa pressed her bouquet to her chest and smiled at me through her tears.

Kellan put his arm around my waist for the cameras.

I stepped out of it.

"Kellan, thank you for looking out for her in London," I said. "Like I asked you to."

A few people chuckled. Somebody said, "Aw."

"Fourteen trips in four years. I have the passport stamps. I didn't know you only had one meeting there."

The chuckling stopped.

Kellan's smile stayed on his face, frozen in place.

"Bren," he said quietly. "What are you doing?"

I turned a page.

"Larissa. Six years ago you couldn't pay your first year in London. I gave you twenty-two thousand dollars. It was everything I'd saved."

I held up the printout of the wire.

Larissa's face had gone white under her blush.

"Bren, honey, not today."

"Today's the only day I've got everybody," I said.

A man in the third row laughed out loud and then covered it with a cough.

"The necklace is on her throat. The towels are in her closet," I said. "You all know the rest."

Three hundred heads turned to look at the teardrop stones.

Someone in the back said, "Oh my God."

Kellan reached for the microphone.

I turned my shoulder and kept going.

I pulled the veil off my head.

I held it up so the whole ballroom could see the crushed side, the missing pearls, the pink smear by the comb.

Larissa's lips were shaking.
