Chapter 15: Your Key Card, Please
Jonas stepped between his mother and Wren.
He had never done it before. In thirty-three years, he had only ever stepped aside.
"Go," he said, without turning. "Take the folder. Take Ruth."
"Jonas, darling," Margaret said. "I'll ring the police."
"Do it. I'll hold the door for them."
His mother's mouth thinned.
She looked at the empty hall, then out at the driver's sedan backing down the lane, and at her son, who was not moving.
Behind him, Wren's footsteps went down the stairs. A truck door closed outside.
Margaret did not ring anyone.
She stood in her gala silk with her wrap slipping off one shoulder, and she waited until the engine had faded.
"You've made a mistake," she said.
"I'll see you at nine," Jonas said. "At the office."
He did not sleep. He sat in his car in the lane until the sky went gray, then drove to the Fernwood sign-in desk with the doors still locked and made the night nurse unlock the visitor book.
The proxy said Ruth had signed it last Tuesday at eleven in the morning, with the notary present.
The book said Margaret Pryce had come through the front door at two.
Jonas photographed the page.
At nine, he walked into the boardroom of the Pryce family office.
Four trustees sat at the long table, with their coffee untouched. They were older than he was, and they had all known his father.
He had called them at six. He had not said why.
Margaret came in at five past, in a navy suit, her pearls on and her pen in her hand.
