Chapter 4: Pearls and an Envelope

On Thursday, at eight in the morning, Margaret Pryce walked into Daley's Bakery.

The line was nine people long. Wren was alone at the counter, with a tray of cheese danishes in her hands.

Margaret did not join the line.

She stood by the window in a cream coat with her pearl studs on, and waited until Wren looked up.

"Good morning, dear."

Wren set the danishes down.

"Mrs. Pryce."

"Margaret. We never needed the formality."

A driver in a dark suit held the door. He was the same driver who had once carried Wren's suitcases into the house.

She understood then who had followed her.

"I'll be with you in a moment," Wren said to the next customer, a man in a work jacket.

"Take your time," the man said. He was watching Margaret.

Margaret walked right up to the counter and laid a cream envelope on the glass.

"It's a cashier's check," she said. "One hundred thousand dollars."

The line went quiet.

"What for?" Wren asked.

"For a fresh start somewhere warm. Arizona, perhaps. Jonas will be seeing Camille, and the city is small. It would be kinder to everyone if you weren't in it."

"I live here. I was born here, and my mother is here."

"You were born in a rented house on Delancey Street." Margaret's voice stayed soft. "I only want you comfortable."
