Chapter 5: One Plain Croissant

Wren woke on a gurney in the ER with Hallie's face an inch above her own.

"You fainted in a bakery," Hallie said. "In front of nine witnesses."

"Nine?"

"And a very large man who called the ambulance."

"Is it the baby?"

"The baby is fine. You're dehydrated and you haven't eaten since Tuesday.

"You've been up at three every day this week."

"I've been eating."

"A ginger chew is not a meal."

The doctor came in, checked the chart, and said she was five weeks along.

She wrote down a prenatal appointment and handed Wren a bottle of vitamins.

"One a day with food," the doctor said. "Real food. No arguing."

Wren put the bottle in her apron pocket and kept it there.

The baker paid for the ambulance.

When she tried to argue, he said, "I own the only croissant oven in this city. Argue with the oven."

On Monday the divorce went through.

Wren knew because a courier brought the confirmation to Hallie's door.

It came in a plain white envelope.

She put it in a drawer and went to work.

At six that morning, the bell above the bakery door rang.

Jonas Pryce stood on the mat in a charcoal coat with his hands in his pockets.

She had not seen him in six days. He looked thinner.

Wren wiped her hands on her apron and said, "Good morning. What can I get you?"
