Chapter 16: The Stacks
Linus listened to take nine eight times before he answered.
He listened to it in the dark on Dag's floor with the phone against his ear and the covers over his head.
It was slow, and it stumbled on two words, and it was the bravest thing anyone had ever sent him.
He did not forgive anything.
At six in the morning he typed back: Fourth floor stacks. Nine o'clock. Bring the book.
Mattias's reply came before he had put the phone down.
Okay.
The fourth floor of the library was the oldest.
It was a long room of iron shelves and green lamps, where nobody went except to be left alone.
Linus took the table in the far corner and set out two copies of The Lamp at Gull Rock and a pencil.
Mattias arrived at five to nine in a gray sweater, with a paper bag.
He stopped three feet from the table.
"I'm not here to talk about that night," Linus said. "I'm here to listen to you read."
