Chapter 19: Above the Bakery
The studio over the Rising Dough had one room, one window, and a radiator that knocked all night.
It had a double bed pushed against the slanted wall and a hot plate.
A bathtub stood in the kitchen with a board over it for a counter.
The baker, a broad woman with flour to the elbows, showed them up the back stairs on a gray Saturday and handed over the key.
"Rent's two hundred and you take the dawn shelf," she said. "The one who can lift. The other one can have his lunch for free."
"I can lift," Mattias said.
"I can eat," Linus said.
She looked at them both and said, "Good," and went down.
They stood in the middle of the room with two duffels and a box of books.
Mattias's tuition was gone.
His card was dead, and his father's door was shut.
In five weeks his one-point-nine would either climb or end him.
None of it showed on his face.
