Chapter 24: In the Light
The ice went out of Larch Lake on the second Saturday in May, with a long groan.
Linus heard it from the studio window and ran down the back stairs in his socks.
Mattias was already on the pier in his bakery apron, with a paperback in his hand.
The gray slabs shifted out across the water, and the open lake beyond them was a hard, bright blue.
"You missed it," Mattias said. "The whole sheet went together."
"I heard."
"I wanted you to see."
"I'm here now." Linus sat down beside him on the boards. "What's the book?"
Mattias held it up.
It was The Lamp at Gull Rock, the spine cracked white, its pages soft from five months of being read in the dark.
"I've got a presentation Monday," he said. "I want to try it on the lake first."
"You don't have to."
"I know." He opened to the first page. "I want to."
