Chapter 19: The Reading Room

Noah stood on the gravel with the box against his chest.

The window was right above him.

The curtain moved a little in the hot wind.

There was a long silence up there.

Then a door, faint and far away, at the other end of the phone.

"Are you in the shed?" Damian said.

Another silence.

"No, sit down. Sit down, Dad."

Noah should have walked.

He didn't.

"You asked me at Christmas," Damian said. "About my roommate. And I said I'd tell you properly."

His voice was shaking so hard Noah could hear it from the ground.

"I'm gay, Dad."

The cicadas in the gum by the car park went on and on.

"I'm with him. With Noah. I've been with him since the fire."

Nothing for a while.

Then, "No. No, Brodie didn't make it up. Brodie's not the one who should've told you."

Then, "Because I was scared. Because of the boys. Because of you."

Then a sound Noah had never heard Damian make.
