Chapter 22: Out Loud

For one second the room was silent.

Then Damian's arms came round Noah and lifted him clean off the carpet.

The noise hit them from every side.

The couches erupted.

Somebody on the pool table was banging a cue on the floor.

The people outside the windows were cheering through the glass.

Bec was whistling with two fingers, the loudest thing in the room.

Damian kissed Noah back.

Then he put him down and pressed his forehead against Noah's.

"Hi," he said.

His face was wet.

"Hi."

"I did it."

"I know. I was here."

"Out loud."

"Out loud," Noah said.

The team swarmed them.

Somebody slapped Damian on the back so hard he staggered.

Somebody slapped Noah on the back too, more gently.

"Nurse Noah!" someone shouted, and this time it was a cheer.

At the back, Mr Whelan had his hand over his eyes.

The warden was standing beside him with a hand on his shoulder.

It took an hour to get out of the common room.

Everybody wanted to shake Damian's hand.

Half of them wanted to shake Noah's.

A girl from the second floor told Noah she'd cried.

A first-year on the team told Damian he'd been too scared to tell anyone either, and Damian put his arm round the kid's neck and talked to him in a corner for ten minutes.
