Chapter 7: The Storm
The ice storm came in on a Wednesday in October, and by seven the bridges were closed.
Teddy stood at the loft windows with his jacket still wet, watching sleet hammer the Mississippi.
"I'll walk," he said.
"You will not." Anders was loosening his tie at the kitchen counter. "Four miles on glass. You have a phone, call Maddie. Tell her you're stuck at the pub."
"Rule one," Teddy said.
"I remember rule one, Gallagher."
"You said Gallagher."
Anders turned.
He stood in his shirtsleeves with the tie hanging open, and his eyes took Teddy in, wet hair, cold nose, jeans soaked to the knee.
"Teddy," he said. "The bridges are closed. Rule one has an exception for weather."
"Does it?"
"It does now."
Teddy texted Maddie. She replied with three sleeping emojis and a note that said ur lucky u have a boss that big-hearted.
He stared at the screen for a while.
He didn't tell her he had no boss.
"You're soaked," Anders said. "Shower."
"Is that an order?"
"It's a kindness." He nodded at a door. "There's a towel. I'll start dinner."
