I read the quote twice.
Then I turned the phone face down on the crate.
At the far end of the table, Leon was awake, reading the same thing on his.
"She waited till you were broke and sad," I said.
"You said she reads people."
"I hate being right."
"There's a card for that."
I didn't laugh. I almost did.
By eight the studio was full and nobody was packing.
Everyone had read it. The junior writer had read it out loud to her mom on speaker.
Pip stood on a chair like I had in the kitchen, the first day.
"Here's what we do about the article," she said. "Nothing. We finish the crates. We get on the plane. We sell cards. Anybody who wants to cry can cry in the freight elevator, one at a time."
Leon left without a word to anyone.
He'd learned that much. Anything he said now would be the next headline.
On Sunday morning the Javits Center was a glass box the size of a town.
Booth 1958 was in the third aisle, ten feet by ten feet.
