Chapter 22: The Panel
"He's agreed," I said. "How generous of him."
"So you'll do it?"
Pip grabbed my sleeve. "Del. He'll have slides. He'll have a Halvern lawyer in the front row. You'll have a brush."
"I'll do it," I told the host.
He shook my hand and left, and Pip sat down on a crate and put her head between her knees.
That night the five of us ate pizza in Pip's hotel room in our socks.
Nobody talked about the panel.
The junior writer did impressions of Lyle shaking hands, and one of the artists laughed until she cried, and for an hour it felt like the night shift.
At eleven I went back to my room alone.
My phone had one text on it. From Leon.
I'm in the city. I'll be in the room tomorrow. I won't say anything unless you want me to.
I read it four times.
I didn't answer.
The main stage was in a hall at the end of the show floor, three hundred chairs and a black curtain.
Every chair was full at two o'clock.
The clip had done that.
I saw the bookstore buyer in the fourth row with her reading glasses on.
