Chapter 25: The Floor
"Here?" I said. "At our booth?"
"If you don't mind," the Halvern man said. "I find people listen better when they can see what they lost."
Leon set my coffee on the table and stepped back against the windmill photo.
He folded his arms and said nothing at all.
At eight thirty the doors opened early for exhibitors and buyers.
By eight forty the aisle was full.
The bookstore buyer was there with her tote. So was the woman from the second row of the panel, with her buyer's badge.
Lyle came across the aisle at a quarter to nine.
He was in a fresh Halvern quarter-zip and he was smiling.
He thought he'd been called over to make peace. I could see it in his walk.
"Morning," he said to the Halvern man. Then, to me, warmly: "Del. Rough day yesterday. For everybody."
The Halvern man didn't shake his hand.
"Lyle," he said, "the bookstore chain called our CEO last night. So did three other accounts. They all asked the same question."
"Which is?"
"What card sixteen says inside."
