"Okay," I said.
He looked at me sideways. "Okay?"
"You asked me for nothing. I'm giving you nothing."
"That sounds like a trap."
"It's the opposite of a trap." I took a pickle off his plate. "I'm not deciding it for you. If you stay, I want it to be because you want to live here. Not because I'm sitting on a bench."
"You're a very good bench."
"Decide it sober, Leon. Not at a party."
He nodded slowly.
Then my dad came over and made him carry a bag of ice, and that was the end of that.
The next morning I came in at nine and my desk was gone.
Not gone. Moved.
It was sitting at the head of the long table in the studio, where the proofs got laid out.
My mug was on it. My pens. The sticky note from the junior writer that said NAME ON THE BACK!!! in four colors.
The whole studio was standing around it.
Nine people, in a half circle, with their arms folded.
