I read it twice.
Then I held the card up over my head.
"Who did this?"
The junior writer looked at the ceiling.
Pip looked at the junior writer.
"She set the type," Pip said. "I lettered it. You signed the proof at two in the morning on Tuesday. You signed everything I put in front of you. You signed a pizza menu."
"It's Norma's line."
"It was Norma's line," the junior writer said. "Now it's on four hundred stores' worth of card one."
I looked at the freight elevator, where the doors had just closed on a camel coat.
Then I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the paper pallets.
We ran it as it was.
In September Leon asked me again, at the long table, in front of Pip.
Pip said, "Oh, honey," and I said yes, and I gave up my radiator.
On the first Thursday in April, a year after the glass, the big room smelled like eggnog.
The old man had launched the Christmas line every spring, in front of the whole floor, with eggnog and a terrible Santa hat.
